Sealing and Bearing Solutions for Aerospace and Defense Industries

Aerospace and Defense

Hytrel TPE Spring Energized Seal for use in medical devicesThe aerospace industry requires sealing solutions that withstand intense pressure, extreme temperatures, and aggressive chemical environments. Manufacturers have developed innovative seal designs to handle these conditions to ensure that the seals last through high-frequency oscillations and the near-constant threat of explosions causing fires.

Advanced EMC Technologies offers critical service seal and bearing solutions. Our aerospace seals include spring-energized Teflon seals, PTFE rotary shaft seals, and other custom polymer sealing products in Hytrel, FKM, HNBR, and Viton. In addition, we offer PEEK, Torlon, and PTFE (Teflon) bushings, bearings, and precision polymer components used in applications that require high performance and reliability under demanding conditions.

Our engineers have provided these aerospace seal and bearing solutions for aircraft, spacecraft, missiles, and defense systems for over 30 years.

Some of the aerospace and defense applications include:

  • Airframes
  • Engines
  • Flight controls and actuation
  • Landing gears
  • Wheels and brakes
  • Electrical grounding and shielding
  • Actuators
  • Fuel systems
  • Gear drive systems
  • Pneumatic systems

PTFE and Aerospace Seals

The aerospace industry often uses PTFE seals in jet engines, air management systems, flight controls, fuel systems, and airframes. Additionally, energized PTFE seals are used along hydraulic controls, pumps, cabin pressure systems, and engine cooling lines.

PTFE seals are popular in the aerospace and defense industries because they offer:

  • Low friction
  • Chemically inert
  • Pressure tolerance ranging from 20 ksi to vacuum pressure
  • Temperature range from -450°F to 500 °F

Spring Energized Seals

Spring energized seals are ideal for applications in which elastomeric seals don’t meet the temperature, chemical, or frictional requirements. These seals are ideal for face sealing applications, pistons, rotary, and rods.

Many spring energized seals are made with ultra-high temperature metal that reduces emissions and provides higher efficiency. The aerospace industry typically uses metal spring energized seals for compressors, consumption chambers, and power turbines.

Other Aerospace Seal Uses

In addition to working in highly volatile conditions, seals are also used for electrical grounding and shielding in pneumatic, fuel, and gear systems.
